How To Reach Halcyon Castle

Kovalam, Kerala, India
Halcyon Castle, now famous as The Kovalam Palace, stands as a majestic relic of the royal past of the princely state of Travancore. It was originally built in 1932 by M.R. Ry Sri Rama Varma Valiya Koil Thampuran, the consort of Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi, as a private summer retreat for the royal f amily. The name 'Halcyon' itself evokes a sense of peace and tranquility, fitting for its original purpose. The castle’s imposing structure and scenic location, overlooking the Arabian Sea, quickly made it a landmark. It was a haven of opulence, hosting extravagant soirees and royal leisure. In 1964, the property was sold to the Government of India, which then converted it into a luxury hotel, initially run by the India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) as part of the Ashoka Beach Resort complex. After a long-standing dispute, the custodial rights were eventually transferred to the RP Group in July 2017, which operates it as a five-star luxury hotel under The Raviz Hotels & Resorts brand (The Leela Kovalam, A Raviz Hotel). Despite its transformation from a private royal home to a luxury resort, the castle has undergone heritage-sensitive restoration, carefully preserving its original charm and majestic façade. Its rich history and connection to the Travancore royal lineage make it a significant historical site, offering visitors a glimpse into the regal lifestyle of a bygone era. The current premises offer luxurious amenities, including suites in the castle itself, making it a blend of history and modern hospitality. The castle is nestled in a lush grove of palm trees, offering panoramic views of the curving coastline. Its transition through ownership—from royal hands to the government and finally to a private luxury hotel group—is a significant part of its modern-day story. It is an architectural jewel that successfully marries historical grandeur with contemporary comfort. ---

How to Reach

By Air:

Trivandrum International Airport (TRV): The nearest and most convenient airport is the

Trivandrum International Airport (TRV), located in the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram. The airport is approximately 15-16 KMS from Halcyon Castle. It is well-connected to major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai, as well as several international destinations, particularly in the Middle East. Upon arrival, the best way to cover the distance is by hiring a pre-paid taxi, an app-based cab service (like Uber or Ola), or a private airport transfer arranged through the hotel. The drive typically takes about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the traffic conditions in Thiruvananthapuram city and the final approach to Kovalam.

By Train:

Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station (TVC): The closest major railway station is the

Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station (TVC), which is approximately 14 KMS from the castle. This station is a major hub on the Indian Railways network and connects Kovalam (via Thiruvananthapuram) to all major cities across India, including long-distance express trains from the North and South. From the station, you can easily hire a local taxi, an auto-rickshaw, or take a local bus to reach the castle. The travel time from the railway station is similar to the airport, around 30 to 40 minutes by road.

By Road:

Well-Connected National Highway: Kovalam is easily accessible by road via the National Highway network (NH 66). The castle's location near Kovalam beach is connected by good quality state and local roads to Thiruvananthapuram city and other parts of Kerala and neighboring Tamil Nadu. One can drive a private car, hire a long-distance inter-city taxi, or take a state-run or private bus. Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) operates buses from Thiruvananthapuram to Kovalam, and from the main Kovalam bus stand, a short auto-rickshaw or taxi ride would be required to reach the castle on the headland.

By Local Transport:

Taxis and Auto-Rickshaws: Within Kovalam, the most practical and readily available local transport options are auto-rickshaws (Tuk-Tuks) and local taxis. Auto-rickshaws are suitable for short distances between the beaches and the castle area. Always agree on the fare before starting the journey or insist on the meter. Taxis, both local and app-based, are better for transport from the main city areas like the airport or railway station. For a more leisurely approach, a pleasant stroll from the main Lighthouse Beach area to the castle, taking about 15-20 minutes, is possible, though it involves a short incline to the headland. ---
