How To Reach Jorhat Science Centre & Planetarium
The Jorhat Science Centre & Planetarium is a flagship institution in Upper Assam, dedicated to promoting science literacy and curiosity, especially among the youth. Inaugurated in 2013, it was developed by the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), under the Ministry of Culture, Government of I ndia, in collaboration with the Government of Assam. The center is a vibrant educational space that goes beyond traditional classroom learning. Its core philosophy is to make complex scientific concepts accessible, engaging, and fun through interactive, hands-on exhibits. The facility is broadly divided into a main Science Centre and a state-of-the-art Planetarium. The Science Centre houses permanent thematic galleries, including the popular 'Story of Oil' gallery, which is highly relevant to the region's petroleum history, and a 'Fun Science' gallery that uses play to demonstrate principles of physics and mechanics. The Planetarium is equipped with modern digital projection technology, offering immersive shows that take visitors on a virtual journey through the cosmos, exploring everything from our solar system to distant galaxies. Surrounded by a lush Science Park featuring outdoor exhibits and a prehistoric park, the institution serves as a crucial knowledge hub, hosting regular educational programs, workshops, and science demonstrations. It plays a significant role in fostering a scientific temperament in the region, attracting students, researchers, and families alike. The center also features models of various prehistoric animals, adding an element of natural history to the scientific themes.
How to Reach
By Air (Nearest Airport and Connectivity) The nearest airport is Jorhat Airport (JRH), also known as Rowriah Airport. It is located approximately 5. 8 KMS from the Science Centre. The airport has direct flight connectivity to major Indian cities like Kolkata and Guwahati. Upon arrival at JRH, you can hire a prepaid taxi, an airport cab, or a local auto-rickshaw. The drive to the Science Centre is quick, typically taking around 15 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic. It is the most convenient option for visitors coming from outside Assam. By Train (Nearest Railway Station and Connectivity) The nearest major railway station is Jorhat Town (JTT), which is well-connected to the rest of the country. It is approximately 2 KMS from the Science Centre. Another option is Mariani Junction (MXN), which is about 18 KMS away, serving as a larger junction for some express trains. From Jorhat Town station, the Science Centre is easily reachable. You can hire an auto-rickshaw or a cycle-rickshaw, which should take no more than 10 minutes. For convenience and speed, a hired taxi is the best option. By Road (Bus and Private Vehicle Access) Jorhat is well-connected to major cities and towns in Assam and the Northeast via National Highways. The Science Centre is situated relatively close to the main city roads. State-run buses (ASTC) and private luxury buses frequently ply from cities like Guwahati, Tinsukia, and Dibrugarh to the Jorhat Bus Terminus. From the bus stand, the centre is a short ride away by local transport. If driving a private vehicle, the location is easy to find using GPS, and there are parking facilities available at or near the site. By Local Transport (Within Jorhat City) Within Jorhat city, the Science Centre is highly accessible. Given its proximity to the city center (only 1. 3 KMS), one of the most common and economical ways to reach it is by auto-rickshaw or cycle-rickshaw. Negotiate the fare before starting the journey. For shorter distances or a more local experience, cycle-rickshaws are plentiful. App-based taxi services, if available, also offer a reliable and comfortable option. Walking is even feasible from the immediate city center area, taking about 15-20 minutes.
