How To Reach Kaba Gandhi No Delo

Rajkot, Gujarat, India
Historical Significance and Biography: Kaba Gandhi No Delo is the highly revered ancestral home of Mahatma Gandhi in Rajkot. The name translates to "Kaba Gandhi's Residence," referring to Karamchand Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi's father, who served as the Diwan (Chief Minister) of the Rajkot State. The mo st significant historical fact is that Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi spent his formative childhood years in this very house, living here from 1881 to 1887 AD. This period shaped his early experiences and character, making the house an invaluable heritage site.Current Function as a Museum: The residence has been meticulously preserved and converted into a museum and memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi's life, teachings, and philosophy. It features pictorial displays, photographs, and authentic artifacts related to his life journey. The exhibits are typically presented with bilingual captions (Gujarati and Hindi) for maximum accessibility and educational value.Preservation of Craft: The site also serves a functional, non-governmental purpose: it often houses a small weaving and embroidery school run by an NGO. This perpetuates Mahatma Gandhi’s deep commitment to the handloom and local crafts (Khadi), turning the memorial into a living, working testament to his self-reliance philosophy.

How to Reach

By Air: Rajkot International Airport (HSR) is about 15 km away. A taxi or cab is required from the airport. Direct the driver to Gheekantha Road near Jubilee Garden. Allow for traffic in the old city area.

By Train: Rajkot Junction Railway Station (RJT) is very close, only about 1. 5 km away. An auto-rickshaw is the most convenient option, but since the location is in the narrow, old city lanes, you might have to walk a short distance from the main road. The ride is very quick.

By Road: The museum is located in the narrow lanes of the old city, just a short walk from the central Jubilee Garden and Jawahar Road. Access for large vehicles is difficult, so it's best to park on a main road and walk. Local city buses stop at Jubilee Garden.

By Local Transport: Auto-rickshaws will drop you close to the entrance, but not directly at the door due to the narrow lanes. Given its proximity to the city center, a short walk from the Jubilee Garden area is often the simplest approach.
