How To Reach Kargil Beach

Bakkhali, West Bengal, India
Kargil Beach is a local name given to a particular, relatively untouched stretch of the shoreline, primarily running toward the Fraserganj side, north of the main Bakkhali tourist area. The name is believed to have been given to the area to commemorate the solemnity or the quiet, enduring nature of the coastal defense. It is distinguished from the main Bakkhali Beach by its greater sense of solitude, less commercial activity, and a slightly wilder, more natural feel. The sand is similar hard, flat, and wide making it excellent for long walks. Because it is slightly removed from the central hub, it sees fewer tourists, attracting mostly those who are specifically looking for a quiet spot for reading, reflection, or long-distance photography. The backdrop to Kargil Beach is less developed, featuring more scrubland, scattered Casuarina trees, and some local dwellings rather than hotels. The sea here is also typically calm, and the beach offers expansive, uninterrupted views of the Bay of Bengal horizon. The transition from the busy Bakkhali center to the tranquility of Kargil Beach is seamless, making it an easy spot to escape the minimal crowds. For visitors, it represents the ideal opportunity to experience the true, peaceful nature of the Bakkhali coast before the area becomes more developed.

How to Reach

The beach's proximity to the main town makes local transport quick and easy.

By Air: Fly to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) in Kolkata (150 KMS). Take a train/taxi to Namkhana, cross the ferry, and then proceed to Bakkhali. From the Bakkhali Bus Stand (the town center), hire a Toto or cycle-rickshaw for the short 2 KMS ride north toward Fraserganj. Instruct the driver to drop you at the quiet section of the beach before the harbor entrance.

By Train: Take the local train from Sealdah South Section to Namkhana Railway Station (NMKA). Cross the river ferry. From the ferry ghat, board a local transport to the Bakkhali Bus Stand. The final 2 KMS to Kargil Beach is best covered by a 5 to 10-minute Toto ride.

By Road: Drive from Kolkata (125 KMS) to Namkhana, cross the vehicular ferry, and drive the final 25 KMS to Bakkhali. Continue driving past the main town center for another 2 KMS toward Fraserganj. The quiet stretch is easily recognizable by the lack of shops and crowds. You can park your car safely on the roadside near the main approach, ensuring it doesn't block the path. By Local Transport (From Bakkhali) If staying near the Bakkhali Bus Stand, Kargil Beach is a pleasant 15 to 20-minute walk along the main road north. Alternatively, a reserved Toto or cycle-rickshaw can cover the distance in under 10 minutes. Negotiate a nominal fare (e. g. , INR 30 to INR 50) for the short ride.
