The Confluence Town: Lachung translates to 'Small Pass' and is a picturesque mountain village situated at the confluence of the Lachen and Lachung rivers, tributaries of the mighty Teesta River. It serves as the primary base camp for tours to the Yumthang Valley (Valley of Flowers) and Zero Point (Y umesamdong). It was historically an important trading post between Sikkim and Tibet before the Chinese annexation of Tibet. Unique Architecture and Culture: The town features distinctive houses built from wood with stone roofs, nestled among apple orchards and steep, terraced fields. The local inhabitants, known as the Lachungpas, follow a unique system of self-governance called the 'Dzumsa,' which is a traditional village administration system, adding a unique cultural layer to the town. Modern and Traditional Blend: While tourism has brought modern infrastructure like hotels and resorts, the heart of Lachung retains its rustic charm, primarily centered around its old monastery and the local villages that dot the hillsides. The deep valley provides breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks in the distance and the gushing rivers nearby. Gateway to North Sikkim: All essential permits and local arrangements for the upper regions of North Sikkim are coordinated from here, making it an indispensable stopover town on the tourist map.

How to Reach

By Air: Bagdogra Airport (IXB) (220 KMS) and Pakyong Airport (PYG) (approx. 150 KMS) are the nearest. Hire a pre-booked taxi/authorized vehicle to Gangtok, then a tourist vehicle to Lachung (approx. 6-7 hours drive from Gangtok).

By Train: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) (215 KMS) is the nearest major railhead. Take an authorized SUV or taxi from NJP to Gangtok, and then proceed to Lachung.

By Road: Lachung is connected to Gangtok via the North Sikkim Highway (approx. 102 KMS). The journey is long (6-7 hours) and often bumpy but scenic. All travel must be in authorized, registered tourist vehicles.

By Local Transport: Once in Lachung, the village is best explored on foot. For trips to Yumthang or Zero Point, a dedicated 4x4 tourist vehicle is mandatory.
