How To Reach Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary

Kochi , Kerala, India
Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary is an ecologically sensitive area nestled right in the heart of the bustling city of Kochi, often referred to as the "green lung of Ernakulam" due to its vital ecological role. This small yet significant bird sanctuary spans over approximately 2.74 hectares (0.0274 square kilometers). It features a unique blend of lush mangrove forests and a shallow tidal lake that is connected to the famous Kochi backwaters by a canal. This specific environment creates a perfect and protected habitat for a diverse range of birds, especially migratory species that visit during certain seasons. The sanctuary was formally declared a protected area in 2004 to safeguard its delicate ecosystem, which supports not only birds but also various species of fish, amphibians, butterflies, and spiders. It is a vital nesting and roosting ground for both resident and migratory birds. Visitors can explore the sanctuary via designated walking trails and a watchtower offers a panoramic view of the reserve and its inhabitants. The serene atmosphere provides a refreshing escape from the urban hustle and bustle, allowing visitors to connect with nature right in the middle of a metropolitan area. The flora is dominated by mangrove and mangrove associate species like Avicennia officinalis and Rhizophora mucronata. The administration and conservation efforts are managed by the Kerala Forest and Wildlife Department.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest major airport is the Cochin International Airport (COK), located approximately 40-45 KMS away from the sanctuary. COK is well-connected with domestic and international cities. Upon arrival, you have several options to reach Mangalavanam: hire a pre-paid taxi or a ride-sharing cab (like Uber or Ola) directly to the sanctuary. The journey by road usually takes about 1 to 1. 5 hours, depending on the traffic, which can be heavy in Kochi. You can also take a bus from the airport to the Ernakulam city area and then a local transport option.

By Train: The nearest and most convenient railway station is Ernakulam Junction (ERS), also known as Ernakulam South, located only about 4 KMS from the sanctuary. Ernakulam is a major railway hub with excellent connectivity to all major cities across India. From ERS, you can easily hire an auto-rickshaw, a taxi, or use local bus services to reach the sanctuary in about 15-20 minutes. The Ernakulam Town (ERN) station is also nearby.

By Road: Kochi is well-connected by National Highways and State Highways, making road travel a good option. The sanctuary is located centrally on Mathai Manjooran Road, close to the Kerala High Court and the Marine Drive area. If you are driving from a nearby city, follow the directions towards Ernakulam city center and then towards the High Court or Ayyappankavu. Local city buses run frequently to the High Court junction area, which is a short walk from the sanctuary.

By Local Transport: Auto-rickshaws (Tuk-Tuks) are readily available throughout Kochi and are the most common and convenient way to reach the sanctuary from anywhere within the city center or from the railway station. They are relatively inexpensive. You can also utilize the city bus network; buses heading towards the High Court area will drop you near the sanctuary. The recently developed Water Metro system, though not directly connecting, has terminals like High Court which are relatively close by, making it an alternative, scenic option for part of the journey.
