How To Reach Manjeera Wildlife Sanctuary

Sangareddy, Telangana, India
Creation and Ecosystem: The Manjeera Wildlife Sanctuary was established on a stretch of the Manjeera River, primarily created due to the water impoundment by the Manjeera Dam. It is a riverine ecosystem spanning over 20 square kilometers and includes the shallow water areas of the reservoir and the surrounding marshy habitats and riverbanks. The sanctuary is renowned not just for its avian population but also for its resident reptile and mammal species. Its primary objective is the conservation of water birds and the endangered Marsh Crocodile (Crocodylus palustris), also known as the Mugger Crocodile. The combination of open water, mudflats, and riparian vegetation creates a diverse habitat matrix that supports a high level of biodiversity. The sanctuary acts as a critical stopover and breeding ground for over 70 species of birds, including both migratory and resident populations. Biodiversity Focus: While birds are the main attraction, the sanctuary also boasts a significant population of the Mugger Crocodile, which are protected within its confines. Other fauna include various turtles, otters (rarely sighted), and monitor lizards. The vegetation consists of dry deciduous forest patches interspersed with scrub and grassland, characteristic of the Deccan Plateau. The presence of a nature interpretation center enhances the educational value of the visit. The management aims to balance conservation efforts with sustainable eco-tourism, offering boat rides in designated, non-intrusive zones to allow visitors to experience the ecosystem firsthand without disturbing the core breeding areas. The sanctuary plays a vital role in regional ecological balance and environmental education for local schools and colleges. Its history is tied to the dam's construction, turning a utilitarian project into a major conservation success story. The water levels fluctuate significantly between seasons, drastically changing the available habitat, which in turn influences the species observed. It is a prime example of a man-made habitat that has flourished into a natural haven.:

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest air travel hub is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD) in Hyderabad, located approximately 90-100 KMS away. From the airport, the most straightforward option is a hired taxi, which can take you directly to the sanctuary via the NH-65 to Sangareddy, then onto the Narsapur road. The drive takes about 2. 5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic conditions, particularly near Hyderabad.

By Train: Major rail connectivity is through Secunderabad Railway Station (SC) or Hyderabad Deccan Nampally (HYB), roughly 70-80 KMS away. A slightly closer but less serviced station is Lingampally (LPI). From any of these stations, take a bus or hire a cab to Sangareddy. Once in Sangareddy, the sanctuary is a short, approximately 20-minute drive.

Note: Ensure the taxi/auto driver knows the location of the Manjeera Wildlife Sanctuary near the Manjeera Dam.

By Road: The sanctuary is conveniently located about 60 KMS from Hyderabad via the NH-65 route. Public buses (TSRTC) run regularly to Sangareddy Bus Station from where local transport must be used. Driving your own vehicle or a rented car is the most recommended option for comfort and flexibility in viewing times, as local transport options can be limited right at the sanctuary gate. The road from Sangareddy town is well-maintained.

By Local Transport: A dedicated round-trip auto-rickshaw from the Sangareddy Bus Station or city center is the only practical way to cover the final 6 KMS. Negotiate the fare for the waiting time as well. :
