How To Reach Nirmal Fort
Nirmal, Telangana, India:
Fortress History and Strategic Location: The Nirmal Fort complex, which includes Batthisgarh and Shamgarh (Qilla Gutta being another part), represents a crucial historical landmark of Nirmal. It was built around 1650 CE by local chieftains like Srinivasa Rao and later utilized and strengthened by th e Asaf Jahi rulers (Nizams) of Hyderabad. Its strategic position on a hillock overlooking the trade routes made it a vital military fortification. The name Batthisgarh is said to refer to the number of bastions or perhaps a measurement unit, while Shamgarh is also attributed to the fort built by the French under Srinivasa Rao. The fort played a significant role in controlling the region and was known for its defenses and arsenal, including old cannons. Despite being mostly in ruins internally, the outer ramparts and bastions still stand as a testament to its formidable past, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the once-adjacent lake. The fort complex is a rich tapestry of Deccani military architecture and local craftsmanship. The history is intertwined with the power struggles between the Marathas, the Mughals, and the Nizams.:
