How To Reach Nongkhnum River Island

Mairang, Meghalaya, India
Place Details: Nongkhnum River Island is a massive geographical marvel formed by the bifurcation of the Kynshi River, which is the longest river in Meghalaya. Spanning approximately 25 square kilometers, it is recognized as the second-largest river island in Asia. The island is a diverse ecosystem of sandy beaches, rolling grasslands, dense forests, and rocky outcrops. It was "discovered" by the outside world relatively recently, in the mid-1990s, which has helped it maintain an aura of mystery and untouched beauty. The island is almost entirely uninhabited, save for a few Khasi families who practice traditional farming and fishing. The entry to the island is a dramatic experience in itself, involving a walk across a suspension bridge over the thundering Weinia Falls. Once on the island, the terrain opens up into a vast plateau that feels like a hidden world. The island is also the gateway to the Langshiang Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in India. Because of its size, exploring the island requires a fair amount of walking, making it a paradise for trekkers and explorers. The geological formation of the island, with the river splitting and then reuniting several kilometers downstream, creates a unique microclimate and a variety of habitats for local flora and fauna. For the people of the West Khasi Hills, Nongkhnum is a source of great pride and is often referred to as the "Island of Peace."
