How To Reach Sayaji Sarovar

Vadodara, Gujarat, India:
The Genesis and Purpose of the Reservoir: Sayaji Sarovar, popularly known as Ajwa Lake, is a massive reservoir located about 22 KM east of the main Vadodara city. It was an ambitious project completed in 1890 by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III to provide a consistent and reliable supply of drinking w ater to the city of Baroda (now Vadodara). The foresight of the Maharaja ensured the reservoir was built three times larger than the immediate requirement, a decision that still benefits a major portion of the city's water needs over a century later. The reservoir was built across the Surya rivulet and the Vaghali Nala. Engineering and Dimensions: The dam wall spans approximately 5.5 KMs (3.5 miles) in length and is about 15 feet wide. A key engineering feature is the presence of 62 gates designed to regulate the water flow. During periods of heavy rainfall and flooding, the excess water from the dam is strategically diverted into the Vishwamitri River which flows through Vadodara. The catchment area of the reservoir covers nearly 195 square kilometers. The road leading from the city to Ajwa is named after the engineer, Shri Jagannath Sadashivji, who oversaw its construction. The scale of this public works project speaks volumes about the Gaekwad administration's focus on essential infrastructure. The Present-Day Tourist Appeal: Today, the reservoir is much more than a source of water. The vast water body and the adjacent well-maintained Ajwa-Nimeta Garden (often compared to the famous Vrindavan Gardens) have transformed it into a major picnic spot and a scenic destination. Visitors are drawn by the panoramic views, the cool breeze, and the tranquil environment, especially during the sunset. The rhythmic cascade of water from the fountains in the nearby garden adds to the serene ambiance, making it a perfect weekend getaway away from the urban bustle. The area around the lake is actively promoted for eco-tourism and nature outings.:

How to Reach

By Air:

The nearest airport is Vadodara Airport (Code: BDQ), located approximately 25 KMs away. After landing, you must hire a taxi or book a ride-sharing service for the approximately 45-60 minute drive, as there is no direct public bus service for tourists.

By Train: The nearest major station is Vadodara Railway Junction (Code: BRC), located approximately 22 KMs away. From the station, you will need to hire a private taxi, an auto-rickshaw (which may charge a higher rate for the distance), or a local bus service heading towards Ajwa Road or Waghodia Road.

By Road: Ajwa Lake is located about 22 KMs from the city center, primarily via Waghodia Road or the dedicated Ajwa Road (named after the engineer Shri Jagannath Sadashivji). It is a smooth drive, and the road is well-maintained. Self-driving is highly recommended for flexibility. Local ST buses also run to the Ajwa area, but their frequency and final drop-off point should be verified.

By Local Transport: Hiring a full-day or half-day private taxi or a pre-negotiated fare with an auto-rickshaw is the most comfortable way to reach Ajwa. Be sure to negotiate the fare for the round trip, including waiting time, as finding return transport from the lake area can sometimes be challenging, especially late in the evening. :
