How To Reach Shanti Ashram
Shanti Ashram is not a historical monument or a natural landmark for general public viewing, but an integral part of the prestigious Netarhat Residential School (NVS). The school, established in 1954, is one of the premier residential schools in India, famed for its high academic standards and uniqu e house system, which is the core of student life. Shanti Ashram is the name given to one of the multiple residential Ashrams (hostels) where the students reside under the care of a House Master and House Mother (Ashram Mataji). The residential life is meticulously structured to instill discipline, self-reliance, and a sense of community. The students, or 'Netarhatians', manage their daily chores, including sweeping, wiping floors, washing utensils, and serving meals, which teaches them dignity of labor—a central tenet of the school’s philosophy influenced by the principles of basic education and the vision of its founder, Frederick Gordon Pearce. The campus, where Shanti Ashram is situated, spans a vast area of over 780 acres and is surrounded by dense Sal and Pine forests, providing a serene and focused environment conducive to learning and holistic development. How to Reach
By Air: The nearest and most convenient airport is Birsa Munda Airport (IXR) in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand. It is located approximately 154 KMS from Netarhat. The journey from the airport to Netarhat takes about 4 to 5 hours.
Post-flight Travel: Upon arrival at the Ranchi airport, you have three primary options:
Pre-booked Taxi/Cab: The most comfortable and direct option. It is advisable to pre-book a reliable private taxi for a direct transfer to Netarhat and potentially for local sightseeing.
Shared Taxi/Cab: Shared taxi services are less frequent but available, connecting the airport or the nearby Ranchi Railway Station to the bus services heading towards Netarhat.
By Train: The nearest major railhead is Ranchi Railway Station (RNC), approximately 145 KMS away. Ranchi is well-connected to major Indian cities like Kolkata, Delhi, Patna, and Mumbai.
Alternative Railhead: A closer, smaller option is Lohardaga Railway Station (LAD), about 70 KMS from Netarhat. From Lohardaga, travelers can hire a private taxi, which may be slightly more expensive, or take a local bus service towards the hill station.
Post-train Travel: From Ranchi or Lohardaga, the onward journey must be completed by road (taxi or bus).
By Road: Netarhat is exceptionally well-connected by road, and the journey itself is scenic, passing through dense forests and the picturesque Chotanagpur Plateau. The road from Ranchi via Lohardaga and Bhandra is the main route.
