Travel Tips Of Shanti Ashram
Tourism Tips
Altitude and Terrain: Netarhat is a high-altitude plateau. While not extremely high, always carry water and take breaks during treks to waterfalls. The trails can be slippery, especially after rain; wear sturdy, non-slip walking shoes.
Medical Emergency: Carry a basic first-aid kit with essential medicines, including pain relievers, digestive aids, and antiseptic cream, as quality medical facilities are limited in the remote area. Mosquito Repellent is essential, particularly during the Monsoon and near water bodies.
Respecting the Local Community: Be mindful that the area around Shanti Ashram is a residential school campus; Do Not Trespass and respect the students’ privacy and the institution's rules.
Packing Essentials:
Warm Clothing (Mandatory): Even in Summer, pack a light jacket or shawl, as the mornings and evenings are cool. In Winter (October to March), heavy woolens, gloves, and caps are necessary, especially for the early morning sunrise view (temperatures can drop near 5°C).
Footwear: Trekking shoes or comfortable, durable walking shoes are a must for exploring trails and waterfalls.
Electronics: A good camera with extra batteries and a power bank is crucial, especially for the sunrise/sunset spots. Carry a good torch or headlamp, as street lighting is minimal on the plateau.
Accommodation:
Booking in Advance: Winter (Peak Season) and local festival times demand that you book your accommodation well in advance (at least 1-2 months). Options range from government-run bungalows (Palamu Dak Bungalow, Governors Chalet) to private hotels and resorts.
Location: Choose accommodation close to the main market or a scenic spot for easy access to the main attractions like the Sunrise Point and the Pine Forest.
Other Important Tips:
Connectivity: Mobile network and internet connectivity can be spotty or limited on the plateau. Inform family/friends about your itinerary and be prepared for potential connection issues.
Hydration and Food: Carry a reusable water bottle. While local eateries offer delicious, safe local cuisine, stick to reputable vendors. Try the local Tribal food for an authentic experience.
Responsible Tourism: Netarhat's beauty is fragile. Avoid Littering—carry back all plastic waste. Respect the forest silence and the local tribal traditions, ensuring your visit is eco-friendly and sensitive to the indigenous Birhor and Brijia communities.
Local Guide: Hiring a local guide is advisable for trekking to remote waterfalls and for insights into local culture and lesser-known spots.
