How To Reach Shillong Golf Course

Shillong, Meghalaya, India
Introduction to Shillong Golf Course: The Shillong Golf Course, affectionately known as the 'Gleneagle of the East' due to its scenic beauty and challenging terrain, is a globally renowned 18-hole course. Situated at a high altitude of about 5,200 feet above sea level, it is considered one of the ol dest, longest, and highest natural golf courses in Asia. Its history traces back to 1898 when it was established as a 9-hole course by a group of British Civil Service Officers. It was later converted to the full 18-hole course in 1924, thanks to the efforts of Captain Jackson and C.K. Rhodes. The course is laid out in a sprawling, verdant valley surrounded by majestic tall pine and rhododendron trees, offering breathtaking, picturesque views that appeal to golfers and casual visitors alike. The natural fairways are carpeted with a unique indigenous grass species that provides a challenging play surface. Beyond golf, the area functions as a vast, beautiful public space for morning walks and is a peaceful escape from the city. The course's stunning natural landscape and historical significance are what cement its place as a top attraction in Shillong. It regularly hosts regional tournaments, attracting professional golfers and spectators, contributing significantly to its reputation. The air quality here is exceptionally clean, making it a perfect spot for nature walks and outdoor activities. It embodies the 'Scotland of the East' moniker of Shillong perfectly with its rolling green hills and misty mornings.:

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest major airport is Guwahati (GAU) (120 KMS). From there, take a shared taxi or private cab to Shillong. The course is a known landmark, and all local taxis can take you directly there from the city center (Police Bazar), which is about a 15-20 minute drive. The smaller Shillong Airport (UMROI) (30 KMS) is a closer option, with taxis available for a direct transfer.

By Train: The closest major railhead is Guwahati Railway Station (GHY) (104 KMS). After arriving, hire a private or shared cab to Shillong. Once in the city, the easiest way to reach the course from the main transport hub (Police Bazar) is by hiring a local city taxi, which will take the scenic route through the town.

By Road: The course is about 4 KMS from the central Police Bazar. It is well-connected by city roads and is a prominent landmark. Local transport, particularly the yellow and black city taxis, frequently ply the route, making it an easy and affordable short ride from any central hotel. Driving yourself is possible, but parking near the clubhouse can sometimes be restricted to members.

By Local Transport: A local city taxi is the most convenient way to reach the course. Negotiate the fare beforehand, or insist on the meter (if available). Due to the slight distance and elevation, walking from the city center is generally not recommended unless you are specifically looking for a long trek, but the surroundings are pleasant. :
