Beadon Falls

Shillong, Meghalaya, India
Beadon Falls is one of the twin waterfalls located in the Mawlai area of Shillong, cascading alongside its twin, Bishop Falls. Unlike some of the more commercialized waterfalls in Meghalaya, Beadon Falls offers a more rugged and natural experience. The water plunges from a height into a deep, lush green gorge of the Umiam River valley. The surrounding area is covered with dense forests and rocky outcrops, making it a favorite for those who enjoy off-the-beaten-path destinations. Historically, this area has been a vital part of the local ecology, and there is a hydroelectric powerhouse located at the base of the falls which utilizes the water's energy. Access to the falls is usually via a viewpoint in the Mawlai area, which provides a panoramic view of the water dropping like a white ribbon against the dark rocks. The falls are particularly voluminous during the monsoon months, creating a thunderous sound that echoes through the valley. However, due to its location in a somewhat secluded valley, it remains less crowded than Elephant Falls, providing a sense of tranquility. Visitors are often captivated by the mist that rises from the base, creating rainbows on sunny afternoons. It is a place that reminds one of the raw, untouched beauty of the Khasi Hills.
