Elephant Falls

Shillong, Meghalaya, India
Elephant Falls is arguably the most popular tourist destination in Shillong, known for its unique three-tiered structure. The British named it "Elephant Falls" because of a massive rock near the falls that resembled an elephant, though this rock was tragically destroyed in the Great Earthquake of 1 897. To the local Khasi people, it is known as "Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew," which translates to "The Three-Step Waterfall." The falls are formed by three successive sections that are connected by a well-maintained pathway and stairs. The first tier is broad and tucked between trees; the second tier is a smaller, narrow stream; and the third tier is the most spectacular, where the water thunders down into a clear pool over dark, fern-covered rocks. The entire area is a lush green sanctuary, filled with the sound of rushing water and the scent of damp earth. It is a highly organized tourist spot with clear signage, safety railings, and local vendors selling traditional crafts. The walk down to the third tier involves about 100 steps, but the effort is rewarded with a majestic view that is perfect for photography. The falls remain a perennial attraction, but they are at their most awe-inspiring during the monsoon when the volume of water is so great that it creates a fine mist covering the entire viewing area. It is a quintessential Meghalayan experience that combines legend, natural beauty, and accessibility.
