How To Reach Sri Sri Athkheliya Namghar

Jorhat, Assam, India
The Sri Sri Athkheliya Namghar stands as a profoundly significant religious institution and pilgrimage site in Assam and the broader North-Eastern region of India. While now a Namghar (Vaishnavite prayer hall), its origins trace back to an older temple, believed to be constructed around 1681 AD by t he Ahom Prince Gadapani (later King Gadadhar Singha). The site's etymology is rooted in the Assamese phrase "Ath-kheliya," meaning "of eight khels" or divisions/neighborhoods. These eight khels—namely Bochakuri, Bairagikuri, Brahmankuri, Nangalkuri, Solalkuri, Kacharikuri, Borahikuri, and Kakatikuri—were the eight Ahom-era administrative groups or families entrusted by King Gadapani with the maintenance and religious duties of the holy place. Initially known as Sri Sri Athkhelia Hori Mandir (a Shiva/Hari temple), it was later influenced by the pervasive Ekasarana Naam Dharma movement of Srimanta Sankardev and his disciple Madhavdev and evolved into a Namghar. This transformation reflects the socio-cultural shift towards Vaishnavism in the region, turning it into a center for community prayers, Naam Prasanga, and cultural preservation. It is situated at a sanctified geographical spot near the confluence of three rivers: Ghiladhari, Mokrong, and Kakodonga, adding to its spiritual reverence. The Namghar is especially important to the Assamese people, drawing massive crowds of devotees, particularly during the holy Assamese month of Bhada (typically falling between August and September), making it a focal point of regional spiritual life. The legacy is one of royal patronage, religious evolution, and community devotion spanning over three centuries.

How to Reach

By Air (Jorhat Airport - Approx. 45-50 km) The nearest major airport is Jorhat Airport (JRH), officially known as Rowriah Airport. This airport has good connectivity with major cities like Guwahati and Kolkata. 1.

From the Airport to Jorhat City: Tourists can take pre-paid taxis, airport shuttle services, or an Ola/Uber ride (if available) to the main Jorhat city center or the nearby Titabar region. 2.

From Jorhat City to Athkheliya Namghar: From Jorhat city, you will need to hire a private taxi or cab. The 40-45 km journey is best done via the Dhodar Ali Road or the SH 33 (State Highway 33) and will take approximately 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. Ensure the cab driver is familiar with Bosa Gaon, near Ghiladhari in Golaghat District. By Train (Jorhat Town / Furkating Junction) 1. Jorhat Town Railway Station (JTT) Located within Jorhat city, this station connects to a few regional lines. 2. Furkating Junction Railway Station (FKG) Located closer to the Namghar at approximately 15-20 km away, Furkating is a major railway junction with better connections to major cities like Guwahati, Kolkata, and even some parts of North India.

From Furkating to Athkheliya Namghar: A taxi or an auto-rickshaw can be hired directly from the station. The short 20 km ride should take about 30 to 45 minutes. This is often the most convenient rail option. By Road (From Jorhat) The Namghar is well-connected by road, although it lies in a semi-rural area. 1.

Private Car/Taxi: Hiring a private cab from any part of Jorhat is the most comfortable and direct way to reach the Namghar. The main route often involves taking the Titabor-Borholla road or Dhodar Ali Road and then branching off towards Bosa Gaon near Ghiladhari. The entire route is scenic, passing through tea gardens and rural landscapes. 2.

Bus: State-run Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) buses or private buses frequently ply the route towards Golaghat or Titabor. One would need to disembark at a major junction near Ghiladhari or Borholla and then take a local transport (like an auto-rickshaw or shared taxi) for the final leg to the Namghar in Bosa Gaon. This option is very affordable but requires more changes.

By Local Transport: From Jorhat or Golaghat, shared auto-rickshaws (Tempos or Vikrams) or local Tuk-Tuk (e-rickshaws) are available to cover the short distances from the main road junctions to the Namghar premises. These are often the only way to cover the last few kilometers of the rural roads.
