How To Reach Tocklai Tea Research Institute

Jorhat, Assam, India
Established in 1911 near the Tocklai River, this institute is a world-renowned center for all aspects of tea science, from the genetics of the tea bush ( Camellia sinensis ) to the final cup. The institute was initially funded by the tea industry with support from the national and state governments. It later became the central hub for the Tea Research Association (TRA) in 1964, expanding its work across all of Northeast India's major tea-growing regions. The vast campus, spread over about 66 hectares (163 acres), is more than just a cluster of laboratories; it's a complete ecosystem for tea research. It houses twelve specialized departments, including botany, biochemistry, agronomy, engineering, and tea tasting. Scientists here are responsible for major breakthroughs in tea cultivation, like the development of over 200 high-yielding and disease-resistant tea cultivars, known as Tocklai Vegetative Clones (TV series). These clones have been fundamental to the growth and sustainability of the entire Indian tea industry. The institute's work focuses on improving overall productivity, enhancing tea quality, and developing sustainable, climate-resilient farming techniques. It also plays a crucial role in transferring this advanced technology to over a thousand member tea estates through its extensive advisory network. Visiting the institute offers a unique, in-depth understanding of the science behind one of the world's most popular beverages, making it an enlightening experience for researchers, tea connoisseurs, and general tourists alike. It stands as a profound symbol of the legacy and future of Assam tea.

How to Reach

Rs.Rs. By Air: The nearest airport is Jorhat Airport (JRH), officially known as Rowriah Airport. This airport is well-connected to major Indian cities like Kolkata and Guwahati with regular flight services. The Tocklai Tea Research Institute is located very close to the airport, approximately 7 to 10 km away.

From the Airport: Outside the airport terminal, you can easily hire a pre-paid taxi or a commercial cab service to reach the institute directly. The journey takes about 15 to 25 minutes, depending on local traffic. Auto-rickshaws are also available but a taxi is more comfortable for travelers with luggage.

Rs. By Train: The main railway station is Jorhat Town Railway Station (JTTN). This station connects Jorhat to other cities in Assam and the rest of India. The institute is approximately 3 to 5 km from the railway station, making it highly accessible.

From the Station: Immediately outside the station, you will find an abundance of auto-rickshaws and local taxis. An auto-rickshaw is the most common and cost-effective local transport for this short distance. The ride should take around 10 to 15 minutes. For longer-distance train travel, travelers often connect through the major rail hub of Guwahati or Dibrugarh before taking a connecting train to Jorhat Town.

Rs.Rs. By Road: Jorhat is an important city in Upper Assam and is well-connected by a network of National Highways. The institute is located on the Jorhat-Mariani Road, one of the main arterial roads.

Inter-city Bus: State-run buses (ASTC) and private buses run regularly between Jorhat and other major towns in Assam, such as Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Sivasagar. Upon reaching the Jorhat bus terminal or main town area, you can hire local transport for the final short distance.

Private/Self-Drive: The institute is only about 5 km from the Jorhat city center. Driving yourself or hiring a private cab is straightforward via the main roads, with clear signage leading to the famous research facility.

Rs. By Local Transport: For travel within the Jorhat city area, the institute is very easy to reach. Auto-rickshaws (three-wheelers) are the most common form of transport and can be hailed from almost anywhere in the city center. You can also use ride-hailing apps, where available, or simply hire a local cab. Given the short distance from the city center (5 km), the journey is quick and inexpensive. Always agree on the fare with the auto-rickshaw driver before starting the journey.
