Joshimath

Nanda Devi National Park, Uttarakhand, India
Joshimath holds immense religious, historical, and strategic importance in the Garhwal Himalayas. It is one of the four "Maths" or monasteries established by Adi Guru Sri Shankaracharya in the 8th century AD, making it a pivotal center for Hinduism. The Math here is dedicated to the Atharva Veda. Strategically located at the confluence of the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers (near Vishnuprayag), Joshimath serves as the primary base town for pilgrimages to Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib, and treks to the Valley of Flowers and Nanda Devi National Park. Its well-connected road network makes it a crucial transit point for travelers exploring the upper Garhwal region. Beyond its role as a transit hub, Joshimath is a pilgrimage destination in its own right. It is home to several ancient temples, most notably the Narasimha Temple, which houses a sacred idol of Lord Narasimha (an incarnation of Vishnu). Local belief holds that as the idol's arm thins, the main Badrinath temple will become inaccessible, and the future Badri (Bhavishya Badri) will emerge in a nearby location. Another significant temple is the Bhavishya Badri Temple, one of the Panch Badri temples, believed to be the future abode of Lord Badrinath. Joshimath also offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks, including the majestic Nanda Devi. It serves as the starting point for the Auli ropeway, one of the longest in Asia, which takes visitors to the famous skiing destination of Auli. The town provides a range of accommodation options, from budget guesthouses to comfortable hotels, along with local markets, restaurants, and essential services, making it an ideal place to rest, acclimate, and prepare for further high-altitude journeys into the Nanda Devi region.
