Kabuli Bagh Mosque

Panipat, Haryana, India
Architectural History: The Kabuli Bagh Mosque is a monument of immense historical pride, built by the first Mughal Emperor, Babur, in 1527. He commissioned this mosque to celebrate his victory over Ibrahim Lodhi in the First Battle of Panipat. The mosque is named after his favorite wife, Mussammat K abuli Begum. It is considered the very first Mughal building ever constructed in India, marking the birth of a new architectural style that would later culminate in the Taj Mahal. Later, Babur's son Humayun added a masonry platform called the Chabutra-i-Fateh Mubarak to commemorate his own victory over Salim Shah. The mosque was originally surrounded by a large walled garden (Bagh) and several gateways, most of which have disappeared over time, but the main structure remains an architectural gem.

Design and Layout: The mosque features a large central prayer hall with two side annexes, each crowned with hemispherical domes.

Dimensions: The main prayer hall is a square structure, while each side annex contains nine bays. The total height of the main dome is about 12 meters. The mosque is built of bricks and finished with lime plaster. The façade is divided into decorative panels, and the central entrance is a huge arch with intricate carvings. The architecture is a fascinating blend of local Indian craftsmanship and the Timurid style that Babur brought from Central Asia.
