The architecture of Kangla Fort is a blend of traditional Meitei and British colonial styles, reflecting its tumultuous history. The fort is spread over a vast area of approximately 2 acres. The height of the main structures, such as the royal coronation halls (known as the Kangla Sha), is about 30 feet. The ancient parts of the fort are characterized by traditional Manipuri temple architecture, with intricate carvings and designs that reflect the spiritual beliefs of the Meitei people. The British-era buildings, such as the Governor's Bungalow, are built in a classic colonial style with a more utilitarian design. The entire complex is surrounded by a massive wall and a moat, which served as a defensive structure in ancient times. The fort's layout is well-planned, with a central courtyard and various royal and religious structures strategically placed to reflect the ancient cosmology of the Meitei people. The combination of old and new, traditional and colonial, makes the fort's architecture a unique and fascinating subject of study.
