Loktak Lake

Thoubal, Manipur, India
Loktak Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India and is renowned for its unique floating islands, called "phumdis." These phumdis are a heterogeneous mass of soil, vegetation, and organic matter in various stages of decomposition. The largest of these is the world's only floating nation al park, Keibul Lamjao National Park. The lake is a vital part of the state's ecosystem, serving as a source of livelihood for local fishermen who live in huts on the larger phumdis. The serene and mystical lake, with its labyrinth of boat routes and pristine water, offers a spectacular landscape that resembles a miniature inland sea. It is a Ramsar site, recognized for its ecological importance and rich biodiversity, which includes various species of fish, birds, and animals. The best way to experience the lake is by taking a boat ride and exploring the unique culture of the people who live on its floating islands.
