Niranam Church

Pathanamthitta, Kerala, India
Ancient Christian Heritage: Niranam Church, also known as Niranam Valiyapally, is one of the oldest and most significant Christian shrines in the world, believed to have been founded by St. Thomas the Apostle in 54 AD. It holds a unique place in the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church as a cradle of Ch ristianity in India. The current structure is the result of several reconstructions over the centuries, with the latest major renovation occurring in 1912. The church is famous for housing the holy relics of St. Thomas, which are kept in a special crypt for pilgrims to venerate. Historically, Niranam was a busy port, and the establishment of this church highlights the ancient trade links between Kerala and the Middle East. The church has seen the transition of Christian liturgy from its early forms to the current West Syriac tradition. It has also been the seat of several Malankara Metropolitans, making it an administrative and spiritual powerhouse. Walking through the church grounds, one feels the weight of nearly two thousand years of continuous faith and worship. It is not just a building but a living museum of the Syrian Christian community's journey through time, culture, and colonial influences.
