Omallur Rektha Kanda Swamy Temple

Pathanamthitta, Kerala, India
Legendary Sacred Site: The Omallur Rektha Kanda Swamy Temple is a highly revered shrine dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, known here as Rektha Kanda Swamy. According to local legend, the deity was originally worshipped at a place called Kalleli, but the idol was later cast into the Achankovil River by a di sgruntled king. It miraculously floated downstream and was recovered by a woman from the Omallur region, who placed it where the temple stands today. This temple is considered one of the most important "Idathavalams" (resting points) for pilgrims on their way to the world-famous Sabarimala temple. The spiritual energy of the place is palpable, especially during the pilgrimage season when the air is filled with "Saranam Ayyappa" chants. Historically, the temple has been a center for social gathering and trade, hosting one of the most famous cattle fairs in South India. The temple complex is expansive, featuring several sub-deities including Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha. It is also famous for the high number of weddings conducted here, second only to the Guruvayur temple in Kerala. The sanctity and the historical narrative of the temple make it a cornerstone of the cultural fabric of Pathanamthitta.
