Pallivasal Tea Estate

Munnar, Kerala, India
Pallivasal Tea Estate holds a significant place in the history of Kerala as it was the site of the state's first hydroelectric project. However, it is most famous today for its breathtakingly beautiful tea plantations that seem to drape over the hills like a lush green velvet carpet. The estate is located near the Chithirapuram area, which was once the residential hub for the engineers and officials of the power project during the British era. The landscape is characterized by perfectly manicured tea bushes that follow the natural contours of the slopes, punctuated by silver oak trees that provide shade. Walking through the estate, one can witness the daily lives of the tea pluckers, often dressed in colorful attire with baskets on their backs, skillfully picking the "two leaves and a bud." The air is perpetually scented with the aroma of fresh tea leaves and mountain wildflowers. Unlike the more crowded spots in Munnar, Pallivasal offers a more quiet and contemplative experience, where the only sounds are the rustling of leaves and the distant murmur of the Pallivasal waterfalls. It serves as a perfect introduction to the tea culture of the region, showcasing how human intervention can exist in harmony with the natural topography.
