Anamudi Peak

Munnar, Kerala, India
Anamudi Peak is the highest point in South India, standing at an elevation of 2,695 meters. Located inside the Eravikulam National Park, it is a majestic mountain that offers panoramic views of the Western Ghats. The peak is famous for its elephant-head shape, which is why it is named Anamudi (Elep hant Head). The area is home to the rare Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered mountain goat. The slopes are covered with lush green tea plantations and dense forests. This peak is a paradise for trekkers and nature lovers who want to experience the wilderness of Kerala. The climate here is significantly cooler than the surrounding plains, often covered in mist. It serves as a vital habitat for Asian elephants and various species of endemic birds. Visitors can witness the rare Neelakurinji flowers that bloom once every 12 years on these slopes. The peak is managed by the Kerala Forest Department to preserve its ecological integrity. Exploring this peak requires a permit, but the view from the Rajamalai area is accessible to all. The biodiversity here is one of the richest in the country. It is a must-visit spot for anyone traveling to Munnar.
