Pangal Fort

Wanaparthy, Telangana, India
Historical Context: Pangal Fort, also known as Pangal Killa, is a historic hill fortress that dates back to the 11th-12th centuries, built during the reign of the Kalyani Chalukyas. Spread across hundreds of acres of rugged granite terrain, the fort has survived through centuries of dynastic shifts, from the Bahmanis to the Qutb Shahis and the Nizams. The fort's strategic location on a series of hill peaks allowed it to control the vital trade routes of the Deccan. To enter the fort, one must pass through seven massive gateways, each designed with military precision to trap and neutralize invading forces. The main entrance, known as Mundlagavini, is a marvel of granite construction, featuring enormous stones fitted together without the use of mortar. Inside, the fort houses the Uyyala Mandapam (Swing Pavilion) and several rock-cut water tanks that still hold water today. The fort was a site of significant guerrilla warfare during the revolts against the Nizam of Hyderabad. Today, it stands as a silent sentinel, offering a moderate trek for those who wish to explore its hidden ruins, secret caves, and ancient temples. The lush green cover during the monsoon makes it one of the most beautiful heritage sites in the Wanaparthy district, perfect for those seeking solitude and history.
