Parshuram Kund

Tezu, Arunachal Pradesh, India
Parshuram Kund is undoubtedly the most significant and revered pilgrimage site in and around Tezu, drawing thousands of devotees annually. Its spiritual importance is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology, particularly in the legend of Sage Parshuram, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. According to t he Kalika Purna, Parshuram, after having committed the sin of matricide, sought atonement. He wandered across the land, but his axe remained stuck to his hand. It was only when he took a holy dip in the waters of the Lohit River at this very spot, then known as Brahmakund, that the axe detached itself, cleansing him of his sin. This legend has led to the profound belief that a dip in the sacred waters of the Kund can absolve one of their sins. The Kund is a natural spring that flows into the Lohit River, surrounded by dense forests and the majestic backdrop of the Eastern Himalayas. The approach to the Kund involves descending a series of steps (often quite steep) to reach the bathing ghats by the river. The atmosphere is deeply spiritual and serene, especially during non-festival times. However, the true spectacle occurs annually during Makar Sankranti (usually around January 14th), when a massive fair is held. During this period, pilgrims from all over India and even neighboring countries flock to Parshuram Kund to take the purifying dip. The fair is a vibrant cultural event, with local tribes bringing down various goods, including traditional handicrafts and rare items, for trade. Beyond its religious significance, the natural setting of Parshuram Kund is breathtaking. The clear waters of the Lohit River, the lush greenery, and the tranquil environment make it a captivating spot for nature lovers and photographers. It's a place where spirituality and natural beauty coalesce, offering both solace and scenic grandeur.
