Glow Lake

Tezu, Arunachal Pradesh, India
Glow Lake is a high-altitude alpine lake situated at an elevation of about 5,000 feet within the Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary. It is one of the most beautiful and secluded lakes in Arunachal Pradesh, covering an area of approximately 8 square kilometers. The lake is surrounded by dense evergreen fore sts and snow-clad mountains, which are reflected perfectly in its crystal-clear, calm waters. Reaching Glow Lake is a test of endurance, as it requires an arduous 8 to 10-hour trek from the nearest road point in Wakro. The trail passes through the heart of the Kamlang sanctuary, home to tigers, leopards, and the rare Hoolock Gibbon. The lake has a mystical aura and is considered sacred by the local Mishmi tribe, who believe it is the abode of ancient spirits. Legend has it that the lake was formed by a great earthquake long ago. The absence of any human habitation around the lake ensures that its ecosystem remains pristine. During the day, the water changes color from turquoise blue to deep emerald depending on the sunlight. At night, the reflection of the stars on the lake’s surface is a sight to behold. Camping by the lakeside is a popular activity for adventure enthusiasts, though it requires specialized gear and forest permits. The area is rich in Himalayan flora, including various species of rhododendrons and orchids. Because of its remote location, very few tourists visit Glow Lake, making it a perfect spot for those seeking absolute solitude and a deep connection with nature. The silence at the lake is profound, broken only by the occasional call of wild animals or the wind rustling through the pines. It is truly a hidden jewel of the Lohit district.
