Pathala Ganga

Srisailam, Telangana, India
Pathala Ganga is a sacred bathing ghat located on the backwaters of the Krishna River, at the base of the Srisailam Hill. It is a place of deep spiritual significance, as it is believed that a dip in its holy waters can cleanse one of their sins. The name "Pathala Ganga" literally translates to "und erground Ganges," alluding to the belief that the river here has a hidden, subterranean connection to the holy Ganges. To reach the riverbank, pilgrims and tourists have to descend a flight of nearly 500 steps from the Srisailam Temple complex or take a thrilling ropeway ride, which offers breathtaking aerial views of the lush Nallamala forests and the glistening river below. The water here is cool and serene, and steps and iron chains have been built to help devotees safely enter the river to take a holy dip. Beyond its spiritual significance, Pathala Ganga is a place of immense natural beauty. The serene river, framed by the steep slopes of the hills and the dense forest, provides a tranquil and picturesque setting. It is also the boarding point for boat rides to the famous Akkamahadevi Caves and the Srisailam Dam. The ropeway ride is an experience in itself, providing a unique perspective and an element of adventure. Pathala Ganga is a confluence of faith, nature, and adventure, a place where one can connect with both the divine and the wild. The cool breeze, the sound of the flowing water, and the stunning scenery make it a perfect spot for meditation and quiet reflection. It is an integral part of the Srisailam pilgrimage, and a visit is considered incomplete without a dip in its sacred waters.

Pathala Ganga is a natural formation, but modern architecture has been integrated for the convenience and safety of visitors. A well-maintained flight of approximately 500 stone steps leads down from the hilltop to the riverbank, covering a total vertical height of about 1500 feet. The steps are wide, with a number of landings and rest points along the way. The most significant architectural addition is the ropeway system, which spans a distance of approximately 450 meters from the hilltop to the river, offering a comfortable and efficient alternative to the steep climb. The ropeway station and the boarding point at the bottom are simple, functional structures. At the riverbank, there are concrete platforms, changing rooms, and iron chains to help pilgrims safely take a dip in the water, which can sometimes have strong currents.
