Pedda Gattu

Nalgonda, Telangana, India
Pedda Gattu, also known as Gollagattu, is a hilltop shrine dedicated to Lord Lingamanthula Swamy (an incarnation of Lord Shiva) and Goddess Choudamma. It is the site of the Gollagattu Jathara, which is the second-largest religious congregation in Telangana after the Medaram Jathara. Held once every two years, this festival draws millions of devotees from across several states including Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra. The Yadava community predominantly leads the festivities, but people of all castes participate. The site is a hilltop that transforms into a sea of humanity during the five-day fete. The tradition is believed to have started in the 16th century. The most iconic part of the festival is the "Devara Petti" (Divine Box), which is brought in a grand procession. The energy, the tribal dances, and the deep-rooted faith make this site a significant cultural landmark of the region.
