Historic City Defense Overview: Burhanpur Fort Wall refers to the remnants of the powerful medieval fortifications that encircled the entire old city. Built primarily during the Faruqi and later the Mughal era, these walls were part of a massive defensive structure that protected Burhanpur, which se rved as a critical base for Mughal expansion into South India, earning it the title 'Gateway to the South' (Dakshin ka Dwar). The walls, constructed from local basalt and brick, were punctuated by numerous massive gates, such as the Shaniwara Gate, Rajpura Gate, and Sindhipura Gate, many of which still stand today. The walls are situated along the Tapti River on the northern side, utilizing the river as a natural barrier. Their main purpose was to defend the city, trade routes, and military encampments from invaders, particularly the Marathas. They represent a blend of military engineering styles adapted to the Central Indian terrain. The strength of these walls was a key factor in the city's strategic importance during the 16th and 17th centuries. The walls and gates are a testament to the city's golden age as a significant economic and military centre.
