Origin Story: Chandubi Lake is a mesmerizing natural lake located at the foot of the Garo Hills, bordering Assam and Meghalaya. The lake was formed overnight during the massive earthquake of 1897, which caused several hills to sink and created a large natural depression that filled with water. This fresh-water lake serves as a major eco-tourism destination, known for its serene environment and crystal-clear waters. The name "Chandubi" is derived from two words—"Chan" meaning five and "Dubi" meaning sinking in the local Khasi language, referring to the five mountains that supposedly submerged. The lake is surrounded by deep tropical forests, tea gardens, and small ethnic villages inhabited by the Rabha and Garo communities. It is a haven for migratory birds during the winter months, making it a hotspot for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.
