Reviews Of Lalitgiri Museum

Jajpur, Odisha, India
Sub Place Details: The Lalitgiri Museum, established by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to housing and displaying the magnificent artifacts found during the excavations of the Lalitgiri Buddhist site. Opened to the public in 2018, the museum provide s a climate-controlled and modern environment to showcase one of the most important collections of Buddhist art in India. The museum's primary attraction is the sacred Relic Caskets found in the Mahastupa, which are displayed with great reverence. These caskets, made of multiple layers of stone and precious metals, once held the bone fragments of Lord Buddha. Apart from the relics, the museum houses a vast array of sculptures from the Mahayana and Vajrayana periods, including colossal statues of Buddha, images of Boddhisattvas like Avalokiteshvara and Manjusri, and various Buddhist goddesses such as Tara and Hariti. The sculptures are carved from local Khondalite stone and demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship achieved by the ancient Odian artisans. Many of the statues show influences of the Gandhara and Mathura schools of art, yet they retain a distinct regional style. The museum is organized into several galleries, each focusing on different aspects of the site's history and the evolution of Buddhist iconography. Detailed descriptive panels and high-quality lighting enhance the visitor experience, making it easy to appreciate the fine details of the carvings. The museum also displays everyday objects used by the monks, such as terracotta seals, pottery fragments, and inscriptions that provide a glimpse into the monastic administration and daily life. Visiting the museum is essential to completing the tour of Lalitgiri, as it provides the necessary context to understand the ruins outside. It serves as a vital educational resource for scholars and a point of pilgrimage for devotees from around the world. The facility is well-maintained and offers a cool retreat where one can peacefully admire the artistic legacy of ancient Kalinga.
