Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary
Named after the legendary ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali, the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is a paradise for birdwatchers. It was the first bird sanctuary in Kerala, established in 1983 following the recommendations of Dr. Ali himself. Spread across 25 square kilometers, it is nestled between the tributar ies of the Periyar River. The sanctuary is a lowland forest, making it a unique ecosystem that hosts over 270 species of birds. Rare sightings like the Sri Lanka Frogmouth and the Indian Pitta attract experts from across the globe. The dense canopy consists of tropical evergreen and deciduous trees, providing a lush green cover year-round. Beyond birds, the sanctuary is home to wildlife like elephants, leopards, and various species of snakes and frogs. The Salim Ali Interpretation Centre inside provides detailed information about the avian life and the history of the park. Visitors can opt for guided tours led by professional naturalists who can identify bird calls and point out camouflaged species. The peaceful environment is only interrupted by the rhythmic sounds of the forest, offering a meditative experience. It is not just a tourist spot but a vital center for conservation and research in South India.
