Shillong Peak
Peak Overview: Shillong Peak is the highest point in the state of Meghalaya, standing at an impressive altitude of 1,965 meters above sea level. This iconic landmark offers a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of the entire city of Shillong, the surrounding lush green hills, and on clear days, e ven the distant plains of Bangladesh. The peak is of great cultural and spiritual significance to the local Khasi people, who believe that their deity, U Shyllong, resides here and protects the valley below. In fact, the city of Shillong derives its name from this very peak and the legend of the deity. The area is currently under the jurisdiction of the Indian Air Force, and a prominent radar station is located at the summit, adding a touch of strategic importance to the site. Despite the military presence, a designated viewpoint is open to the public, providing telescopes for a closer look at the city’s landmarks. The climb to the peak, whether by vehicle or trekking, is filled with scenic vistas of pine forests and colorful wildflowers. The weather here is significantly cooler than in the city, with mist often rolling in to create a mysterious and romantic ambiance. It is a popular spot for families, couples, and photography enthusiasts who want to capture the landscape from the best vantage point possible. There are small kiosks at the summit selling local snacks and traditional Khasi attire that visitors can rent for photographs.
