St. George Orthodox Church, Chandanapally

Pathanamthitta, Kerala, India
Historical Significance: St. George Orthodox Church, popularly known as Chandanapally Valiyapally, is one of the largest and most magnificent churches in South India. Dedicated to St. George, the patron saint of England, it is a major pilgrimage center for the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. The f irst church here was built in 1810, renovated in 1875, and completely reconstructed in 2000. The name "Chandanapally" means the abode of sandalwood trees. Legend has it that the village was once infested with snakes, and the residents sought the protection of St. George, who is traditionally depicted as a dragon-slayer. Even today, people of all faiths visit this church seeking protection from evil spirits and diseases. The church is famous for its grand festivals and the massive size of its structure. The interior is as breathtaking as the exterior, with beautiful murals and a sense of divine peace. It stands as a symbol of the rich Christian heritage of Kerala and the communal harmony of the region. The church also houses the holy relics of the saint, making it a highly revered spot for believers.
