Tea Museum

Munnar, Kerala, India
Opened on April 1, 2005, the Tea Museum in Munnar is the first of its kind in India, dedicated to the history of tea in the High Ranges. It is located at the Nallathanni Estate and is operated by the Kanan Devan Hills Plantations Company. The museum painstakingly chronicles the transformation of Mu nnar from a wild jungle to a structured plantation town. Inside, visitors can find an incredible collection of artifacts, including a 1905 Rotorvane used for tea processing and a Pelton Wheel from the 1920s power house. One of the highlights is the burial urn from the 2nd century found in the area, showcasing the ancient history of the region. The museum also features a gallery of old photographs of British planters and the evolution of tea machinery. A 30-minute documentary takes you through the legacy of Tata Tea and the resilient spirit of the workers who built this industry. The demonstration room allows visitors to witness modern tea processing, where the transformation from green leaf to black tea is explained by experts. It is an essential stop for anyone wanting to understand the soul of Munnar.
