It represents "Tel" (oil) in the spiritual trinity of Milk (Dudhiya), Buttermilk (Chhashiya), and Oil (Teliya), which are believed to have been created by divine intervention for the devotees of Goddess Mahakali. Its fame also stems from its location within a UNESCO World Heritage site, showcasing ancient Indian rainwater harvesting techniques. Pilgrims visiting the Mahakali Temple often stop here to offer prayers, especially those following the Jain faith, as the Suparshvanath temple stands on its banks. The lake is also renowned among history enthusiasts for its association with the Patai Rawal (the last Chauhan king) and the subsequent siege by Sultan Mahmud Begada. It remains a symbol of the survival and self-sufficiency of the ancient hill fortress. -

Unlike modern concrete reservoirs, this lake was carved into the natural volcanic rock formations of the hill, utilizing the natural depressions of the Mauliya plateau. The dimensions of the lake are roughly 150 meters in length and 120 meters in width, though these vary with seasonal rainfall. The catchment area was expertly designed to collect runoff from the higher peaks, funneling it into the basin through stone-lined channels. The perimeter of the lake features remains of ancient stone embankments and steps (ghats) made of locally sourced sandstone and basalt, which allowed pilgrims to access the water safely. These stone blocks were often joined using traditional lime mortar or simple interlocking techniques that have withstood centuries of weathering. Near the lake, you can observe the ruins of small stone pavilions and niches that once housed deities or provided shade to travelers. The architectural layout integrates seamlessly with the nearby Suparshvanath Jain Temple, creating a cohesive religious complex. The engineering reflects a deep understanding of topography, as the lake is positioned to prevent overflow from damaging the lower fortifications while maintaining a consistent water level through gravity-based drainage systems. -
