Tenzing and Gombu Rock

Darjeeling, West Bengal, India
Adventure Heritage: Tenzing Rock and Gombu Rock are two massive natural rock formations located on Lebong Cart Road. They are named after the legendary mountaineers Tenzing Norgay, one of the first two individuals to reach the summit of Mount Everest, and his nephew Nawang Gombu, the first person to summit Everest twice. These rocks serve as the primary training ground for the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI). Tenzing Rock is a gigantic, nearly vertical monolith that challenges even professional climbers. It is said that Tenzing Norgay himself used to practice here, and he once famously demonstrated a climb for Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru without any safety gear. The Gombu Rock, located right opposite across the road, is slightly less steep but equally important for training. For tourists, the right face of Tenzing Rock has been made accessible for amateur climbing with the help of local guides and ropes. The experience of climbing even a few meters provides a thrill and a deep respect for the skills of the Sherpas. The area is often bustling with activity, as young trainees from the HMI can be seen rappelling down the sheer faces. Local vendors nearby sell steaming plates of momos and cups of hot Darjeeling tea, making it a popular pit stop for those exploring the northern part of the town. The atmosphere is filled with a sense of adventure and the legacy of Himalayan exploration. Watching a professional climber scale the vertical left face of Tenzing Rock in minutes is a sight that leaves many visitors in awe. It is a place that celebrates the spirit of the mountains and the physical prowess required to conquer them.
