Thommankuthu Falls

Idukki, Kerala, India
Thommankuthu Waterfalls is a breathtaking seven-step waterfall located amidst the thick forests of the Idukki district. Unlike a single vertical drop, this waterfall descends through a series of seven distinct levels or "kuthus," creating a spectacular visual of cascading white foam against dark ro cks. Each step has a natural pool at its base, some of which are safe for a refreshing dip. The name is derived from a local hunter named Thomman, who is said to have discovered the falls. The entire area is an eco-tourism destination managed by the Forest Department, ensuring that the natural habitat remains undisturbed. To see all seven steps, visitors must undertake a 12-kilometer trek through the dense forest, which is an adventure in itself. However, the first few steps are easily accessible for casual visitors. The forest is rich in biodiversity, and the trek offers chances to see rare butterflies, medicinal plants, and giant forest trees. The air here is incredibly pure, filled with the mist of the falling water and the scent of the moist earth. It is a preferred destination for those who enjoy trekking and want a more "raw" nature experience compared to the more commercialized falls in the region.

Natural and Rustic Elements: The "architecture" at Thommankuthu is primarily the work of nature, but the forest department has added minimal rustic structures. There is a small entrance gate and a ticket counter built using local stones and wood. A narrow forest path, approximately 4 feet wide, winds through the trees for about 500 meters to reach the first level. Small wooden bridges, about 20 feet long, have been constructed over minor streams to facilitate the trek. The viewing platforms are simple clearings with wooden railings for safety. The focus is on maintaining the forest's original state, so there are no massive concrete structures near the falls.
