The Royal Necropolis: Borbaruah Moidam refers to the burial mounds or tumuli of the high-ranking Ahom officials known as the Barbaruahs. These structures are similar in design to the famous Charaideo mounds, often called the Pyramids of Assam. Funerary Traditions: The site contains the remains of De ka Dihingia Borbaruah and Bura Dihingia Borbaruah, illustrating the social hierarchy of the Ahom court. These mounds were built by placing the deceased in a vault with their prized possessions and covering it with earth. Archaeological Value: The site is a goldmine for historians studying the burial customs and societal structure of medieval Assam. The hemispherical mounds are covered in grass and have managed to survive the elements for centuries. Nature and History: Today, the area is maintained as a historical park where the quiet atmosphere allows visitors to contemplate the fleeting nature of power while walking among the resting places of some of the most powerful men in Assamese history.

Health and Safety: The ground around the mounds can be uneven. Wear shoes with good grip to avoid slipping. Be cautious of the tall grass during the monsoon season as it can hide insects or small snakes.

Packing: Bring a hat and sunblock as there is limited shade directly on the mounds. A bottle of water and some light snacks are useful since there are no large cafes at the archaeological site.

Accommodation: Stay in Sivasagar town. For a more traditional experience, some local homestays in the Nazira area provide a chance to experience Assamese village life while being close to the Moidams.

Respect the Site: Remember that these are burial grounds. Maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor. Do not attempt to dig or remove any stones or earth from the mounds as it is a protected site.
