Travel Tips Of Cheeyappara Waterfalls

Munnar, Kerala, India
Cheeyappara Waterfalls is a spectacular natural wonder located on the way to Munnar from Kochi. It is famous for its unique seven-tiered structure, where the water cascades down in seven distinct steps. The waterfall falls from a height of nearly 1,000 feet, creating a thunderous sound and a misty spray that cools the air. It is situated right on the national highway, making it one of the most accessible waterfalls in Kerala. The surrounding area is covered in 500 acres of dense evergreen forests, which are home to various species of birds and small animals. Visitors often stop here to refresh themselves after a long mountain drive. Unlike many other falls, Cheeyappara does not dry up completely in summer, though it is most majestic during the monsoon. The rocks are dark and rugged, providing a stark contrast to the white foamy water. There are several small stalls nearby selling local snacks like spiced pineapple and ginger tea. It serves as the unofficial "Gateway to Munnar," giving travelers their first taste of the high-range wilderness. The mist from the falls often creates rainbows when the sun hits the water at the right angle. It is a favorite spot for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike. The area is also known for trekking and rock climbing for those who want to explore deeper into the woods.

Tourism Tips

Health & Safety: Be extremely careful of the slippery moss-covered rocks; do not attempt to climb the waterfall tiers without gear.

Traffic Safety: Since the falls are on a busy highway curve, watch out for speeding vehicles while crossing the road for photos.

Cash & Connectivity: Keep small change for snacks; mobile signals are decent, but there are no ATMs within a 10 KM radius.

Wildlife Caution: Be mindful of monkeys near the food stalls; they are known to snatch bags or food from unsuspecting tourists.
