Travel Tips Of Eravikulam National Park

Munnar, Kerala, India
Eravikulam National Park is one of the premier attractions in Munnar and a high-altitude protected area. Spread over 97 square kilometers, this national park is particularly famous for being the natural habitat of the highly endangered Nilgiri Tahr, a species of wild goat endemic to the Western Ghat s. The park's landscape is characterized by rolling grasslands, high-altitude shola forests, and magnificent views of the surrounding tea plantations and misty valleys. The park is divided into three regions: the core area, the buffer area, and the tourism area (Rajamalai). Tourists are only allowed into the Rajamalai area, where the chances of spotting the Nilgiri Tahr grazing peacefully are very high. The park also houses Anamudi Peak, the highest peak in South India, standing tall at 2,695 meters, though trekking to the peak itself requires special permission and is often restricted. The sheer biodiversity, combined with the breathtaking natural beauty, makes Eravikulam National Park a must-visit. The park is also the major domain of the Neelakurinji flower, which transforms the entire landscape into a mesmerizing blue during its mass blooming, an event that occurs once every twelve years. Visitors can enjoy a scenic bus ride operated by the forest department up to the view point, followed by a short walk to fully appreciate the stunning vistas and the unique ecosystem. This experience provides both a wildlife encounter and an opportunity for nature photography amidst a serene backdrop. The conservation efforts here are exemplary, focusing on protecting the tahr and its fragile environment.

Tourism Tips

Health & Safety (High Altitude and Wildlife): Since the park is at a high altitude (up to 2,695m), it is important to walk slowly and comfortably, especially for people with respiratory or heart conditions. Carry necessary medications. Stick strictly to the designated trails and do not try to feed or touch the Nilgiri Tahr or other wildlife; they are wild animals, and it is a protected area.

Packing (Warm Clothing and Footwear): The weather can be quite cold, especially in the early mornings and during the Winter season. Pack warm layers, including jackets, sweaters, and caps. Comfortable, closed, non-slip footwear is essential for walking on the paved trails and potentially slippery steps. A light rain jacket is advisable even outside the Monsoon season due to the unpredictable hill climate.

Accommodation (Munnar Town or Nearby): Accommodation is not available inside the national park. The best option is to stay in Munnar town or the surrounding villages like Rajamala, Pallivasal, or Chinnakanal. Options range from budget homestays and hotels to luxury resorts, many offering stunning views of the tea plantations. Book well in advance, especially during the October to February peak season.

Other Different Topics (Tickets and Rules):

Ticket Booking: Book your entry tickets online well in advance through the official Kerala Forest Department website to save time and secure your entry, especially during the peak season.

Park Rules: Photography is allowed, but strictly prohibit the use of flash photography on animals. Littering is a serious offense; carry all your waste back with you. Consuming alcohol or smoking is strictly prohibited. Respect the queue for the Forest Department bus.

Food and Water: Carry your own water bottle. There are basic refreshment stalls available near the main entrance and the viewpoint, but options are limited.
