The Royal Serenity of Lotus Mahal: The Lotus Mahal, or Chitrangini Mahal, stands as a rare and captivating example of secular architecture within the fortified Zenana Enclosure of Hampi. Built for the royal women of the Vijayanagara Empire, its name derives from the multi-layered roof and arched ope nings designed to resemble a half-opened lotus flower, a symbol of purity and divine beauty. Unlike many stone structures, this palace was built using brick and mortar and plastered with fine stucco, allowing for the intricate, curving designs not easily achieved in granite. Its survival in a relatively intact state, after the 1565 AD invasion, is attributed to its distance from the main court and perhaps its distinctive Indo-Islamic style. The cool interior was an architectural feat, utilizing a natural air conditioning system with water channels running through the complex to maintain a pleasant temperature for the queens and their companions, making it a place of leisure, music, and council. The pavilion is two-storied and perfectly symmetrical, presenting an optical illusion of a complex flower when viewed from different angles, embodying the aesthetic sensibilities of the era.
