Things To Do
Established in 1929, Annamalai University is a renowned educational institution spread across a vast campus. While primarily an academic center, its impressive architecture and serene environment might be of interest to some visitors. The university has various departments covering arts, science, engineering, and medicine. The sprawling campus offers a glimpse into the educational landscape of Tamil Nadu. You can explore the main buildings and the overall layout of this esteemed institution.
The Rockfort Temple is a prominent landmark of Trichy, a complex of three Hindu temples built on a 83-meter high rock. The ascent involves climbing hundreds of steps carved into the rock. The lower temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Thayumanavar, while the upper temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha as Ucchi Pillayar, offering panoramic views of Trichy city, the Kaveri River, and Srirangam Island.
The rock itself is ancient, believed to be one of the oldest in the world. The architecture of the temples showcases the Pallava, Chola, Pandya, and Vijayanagara styles, reflecting the various dynasties that ruled the region. The climb, though strenuous, is a rewarding experience, both for the spiritual significance and the breathtaking vistas from the summit.
The Valparai area, within the buffer zone of ATR, is dotted with sprawling tea and coffee estates. Some of these estates offer accommodation, providing a unique experience of staying amidst the lush plantations. These stays often come with opportunities to learn about the cultivation and processing of tea and coffee, enjoy the serene landscapes, and sometimes even spot wildlife in the surrounding areas. The colonial-era bungalows offer a charming ambiance and a peaceful retreat. It's a different way to experience the Anamalai region, focusing on its agricultural and scenic aspects while being close to the natural beauty of the tiger reserve.
