Nilgiri Mountain Railway

Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) is a true engineering marvel and a UNESCO World Heritage Site that begins its journey from Mettupalayam. Built by the British in 1908, this toy train is one of the few remaining steam-powered rack railways in the world. The journey from Mettupalayam to Ooty covers a distance of 46 kilometers, winding through the breathtaking landscape of the Western Ghats. The train moves at a slow and rhythmic pace, allowing passengers to soak in the views of dense forests, cascading waterfalls, and sprawling tea plantations. It passes through 16 tunnels, 250 bridges, and 208 curves, making it one of the most scenic rail journeys in Asia. The most unique feature is the "Rack and Pinion" system used between Mettupalayam and Coonoor to climb the steep gradient. The vintage blue and yellow wooden coaches add a nostalgic charm to the experience. For many, this is not just a train ride but a journey back in time. The station at Mettupalayam itself is a beautiful heritage building that serves as the gateway to the hills. The train is famously known as the "Ooty Toy Train" and has been featured in several iconic movies. The smell of the steam engine and the cool mountain air as you ascend create an unforgettable sensory experience. Due to its popularity, tickets are often booked months in advance. It remains a symbol of the region's colonial heritage and a must-do activity for every traveler visiting Coimbatore and the Nilgiris.
