Tso Lhamo Lake
Geographical Marvel: Located at a staggering altitude of approximately 5,330 meters (17,490 feet), Tso Lhamo Lake (also spelled Cholamoo or Cho Lhamo) is recognized as the highest lake in India and one of the highest in the world. Source of the Teesta: It is a significant glacial lake, fed by the su rrounding snow-capped peaks and glaciers of the Himalayas, and is considered one of the primary sources of the mighty Teesta River. The air is extremely thin, and the weather is harsh. Security Status: Due to its position just 4-5 KMS from the international border with China (Tibet), this location is highly sensitive, and access is extremely restricted, requiring special permits even beyond the Gurudongmar Lake checkpoint. By Road: Drive from Lachen to Tso Lhamo (70-74 KMS). The drive is extremely difficult, on an unpaved, rough, high-altitude road, taking 4-6 hours one way in a permitted 4x4 vehicle. It is past Gurudongmar Lake.
By Local Transport: Only pre-booked, specially permitted, authorized tour vehicles are allowed. No local public transport exists. -
