Vantawng Falls

Tamdil, Mizoram, India
The Vantawng Falls Details: Vantawng Falls, locally known as Vantawng Khawhthla, is the highest and most spectacular waterfall in Mizoram. It is located on the Vanva River near Thenzawl in the Serchhip district. The waterfall plunges from a staggering height of approximately 750 feet (229 meters), m aking it the 13th highest waterfall in India. The falls are named after Vantawnga, a legendary swimmer who was said to be so skilled that he could swim like a fish, but tragically died when a falling log hit him during a performance at the falls. The waterfall is a two-tiered cascade, surrounded by a dense forest of bamboo and tropical trees. Due to the sheer cliffs and the force of the water, it is nearly impossible to reach the base of the falls. However, the Tourism Department has constructed a comfortable viewing tower that offers a panoramic view of the entire cascade against the backdrop of lush green hills. The sight of the white, frothing water falling against the dark green foliage is truly a magnificent spectacle. During the monsoon season, the volume of water increases significantly, creating a thunderous roar that can be heard from a distance. The area around the falls is rich in biodiversity, and visitors can often spot various species of birds and butterflies. Vantawng Falls is not just a natural wonder but also a symbol of the rugged beauty of the Mizo hills. It is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Mizoram, offering a sense of awe and tranquility. The journey to the falls involves traveling through scenic winding roads that provide glimpses of the rural life and traditional villages of the state. The falls are best viewed during the post-monsoon months when the sky is clear and the water flow is at its peak. It is a popular picnic spot for locals and a highlight for international tourists seeking untouched natural beauty.
