Lengpui Airport

Tamdil, Mizoram, India
Lengpui Airport is a remarkable engineering feat and the primary aerial gateway to the state of Mizoram. It is uniquely significant as it was the first major airport in India to be built by a State Government rather than the central authorities. Situated at an altitude of 405 meters above sea level, the airport serves the capital city of Aizawl, providing vital connectivity to major Indian cities like Kolkata, Guwahati, and Delhi. The airport is famous for its "table-top" runway, which means it is located on top of a plateau with steep drops at both ends. This configuration requires high precision from pilots and offers passengers breathtaking views of the lush green hills and winding rivers during takeoff and landing. The construction was completed in a record time of two years and two months, starting in 1995 and finishing in 1998. One of the most fascinating aspects of the airport is that several mountain streams flow directly underneath the runway, which was a massive challenge for the engineers. The airport acts as a lifeline for the state, especially during the monsoon when road travel can be difficult due to landslides. The terminal building is compact and efficient, designed to reflect the local culture and provide a warm welcome to visitors. As you step out of the aircraft, the cool mountain breeze and the panoramic vista of the surrounding Mizo hills immediately set the tone for a peaceful vacation. Recent upgrades have introduced modern navigation systems and improved passenger facilities, including better lounges and food stalls. The airport is not just a transit point; it is a symbol of Mizo self-reliance and progress in the difficult terrain of the Northeast.
