Akal Takht

Jallianwala Bagh, Punjab, India
Akal Takht, which translates to "Throne of the Timeless One," is one of the five Takhts (seats of power) of the Sikhs. It is the highest temporal seat of Sikh authority, and it is located within the Golden Temple complex, directly opposite the main shrine. The Akal Takht was built by Guru Hargobind, the sixth Sikh Guru, in 1606, as a symbol of the political and military sovereignty of the Sikh people. The Takht is a place where all major decisions concerning the Sikh community are made. The Akal Takht's history is intertwined with the Sikh faith, and it has been the site of many important events, including the assassination of the Sikh hero Baba Deep Singh. The building was rebuilt after it was damaged during Operation Blue Star in 1984. The Akal Takht is a powerful symbol of the Sikh people's identity and their commitment to their faith and their way of life. The building is a simple, unadorned structure that stands in stark contrast to the opulence of the Golden Temple. This simplicity is deliberate and is a testament to the Sikh belief in humility and the importance of a spiritual life. The Akal Takht is a place where you can witness the core values of Sikhism in action.
